Chess in Riyadh
Riyadh’s chess shows mostly through the federation’s calendar, the tournament server and a handful of cafés and academies. Small clubs such as Kings Chess Club, KSHMAK and Only Move run rated rapid days in a social centre and on university campuses, the Riyadh Open and its women’s editions are played in a school in Al Malqa, a Meetup group fills Cima Cafe on Saturday evenings, and two academies teach: Golden Horse Academy in Al Narjis, AR Chess Academy online.

Chess960 in Riyadh
Saudi titles on the tournament server from 2025 to 2027 and the FIDE list of rated events for the kingdom were scanned for 960, Fischer random and Freestyle, in English and in Arabic. One Riyadh event turned up: a rapid championship of the club Only Move whose title reads ONLY 960, though its page never names the variant in words.
In Chess960 the pieces on the back rank begin in one of 960 shuffled orders, so memorised openings stop helping and both sides have to think from the first move. Between such events in Riyadh, the variant can be played online at ch960.com.

How the listings are kept
Every listing here rests on a page a reader can open: a federation notice on chessksa.com, a row or tournament page on chess-results.com, the FIDE list of rated events, a Meetup page or an academy’s own site. Hardly any of them prints a street, an entry fee or a weekly hour, so most cards say what is known and leave the rest marked as unknown.
In every list the place with the most recent dated sign of chess comes first, and that order says nothing about quality. A question no page answers reads “not stated by sources” instead of being filled in by guesswork. The page on how places are verified explains the status lines, the source marks and what was left out.
Do you run a chess evening in Riyadh?
Clubs and cafés here often live on Instagram and X, which this directory cannot read, so a weekly game can go unseen. A link to a tournament page, a Meetup event or a public post that shows where and when you play is enough to add it.
